Multi-factor authentication stops the overwhelming majority of account takeovers — and it's fast to deploy. Here's why it matters and how to roll it out cleanly.
The one control that changes everything
If you could make a single security change this quarter, make it this: enforce multi-factor authentication (MFA) on every account that matters — especially email, financial, and admin accounts.
Estimates from across the industry consistently show that MFA blocks the overwhelming majority of automated account-takeover attacks. Stolen passwords simply aren't enough when the attacker also needs a second factor.
Why email is the #1 target
Email is the skeleton key to your business. Reset a password? Confirmation link goes to email. Approve a vendor payment? Confirmation goes to email. An attacker in your inbox can quietly become you.
How to roll it out without the pain
- Start with admins and finance. Highest blast radius first.
- Use an authenticator app over SMS where possible — app-based codes and push approvals are more resistant to interception.
- Communicate before you enforce. A short heads-up prevents a flood of lockout tickets.
- Keep recovery options current. Lost devices shouldn't mean lost access.
MFA won't fix everything — but no other single control gives you this much risk reduction for this little effort.
